South Korea Itinerary and Travel Tips

10 Days South Korea Itinerary and Travel Tips

I booked a ticket bound for Korea 3 months ahead of time. I was still fortunate to land on a promo fare but it wasn't as cheap as planned. Make sure to book your flights ahead and plot your annual leave ahead of time too. My sister has been assigned to Korea for 9 months and we planned to be together there before she flies back to the US. It was supposed to be a free and easy trip with her, free lodging at her place and all.

However, a month before my scheduled flight there were some changes it turns out that I needed to find a place to stay and be on my own for 5 days. The First 5 days of my trip comprise only me and my backpack while the other remaining 5 days will be to tag along with my sister. I considered it as another adventure, my second unplanned solo trip in the Soul of Asia in a country named Korea. Let’s go!

What to do in South Korea

Day 1: Arrival

The moment I arrived at the airport everyone was running, I thought maybe they needed to catch another flight. Later on, I realized they were actually trying to get in first to the train which transfers us to the airport immigration lobby. When I arrived in the lobby oh my the queue was long, that's when I fully understood the chaos of being first on the train. I just waited patiently showed my passport with the attached visa and that was it I was legally allowed to enter Korea. Even though I travel a lot yet when it comes to the immigration area I still get nervous about running away, being impatient, and the possibility of being questioned. I hate that feeling. Once I was out of that mayhem I immediately navigated the airport and looked for the information counter.

Purchase the T-money card at 7'11 or G25 for 4,000 won

Stores are located on both sides of the airport lobby. Top up at least 30,000 won. Take the Elevator and proceed to Basement 1. Follow the sign that leads to KTX Trains. I arrived in the evening so I made sure to be out from the airport to catch the train before it closed down, and to give me some time to navigate my guesthouse.

Day 2: Nami Island

I woke up late the next day to recover from the tiring flight the previous night. My plan that day was to have a relaxing day on Nami Island, I wanted this trip to be as relaxing as possible. From my guesthouse, the nearest train station that leads to Gapyeong station is Yongsan MRT Station.

Seoul to Nami Island

How to get there: Seoul to Gapyeong
Two options: Yongsan or Cheongyangni Station Station, then take the ITX train.

I chose Yongsan Mrt Station as it's closer to my guesthouse.

1. Boa Travel House From Hongik Univ. Station (Green Line and Light Green Line), Take the Light Green Line to Gyeongui-Jungang Line all the way to Yongsan Station (3 Stations) Travel time: 9 minutes.
2. In Yongsan Station  (Seoul Subway Line 1), buy ITX-Cheongchun tickets at the train ticket station to Gapyeong Station. Ticket fare: 4,000 won
Travel time: 45 minutes

To purchase an ITX train ticket, you need to get out of the MRT station and proceed to the nearest ITX machine located near the station entrance. Afterwards, you don't need to tap in back, proceed to the train officer in the corner or the Ajhussi and show your ticket, he will let you in then find your way to the ITX railway platform. Keep your eye out for the ITX train sign It is a bit confusing because the Korail Train or the normal train is around the area as well.

The ITX train is a 2-storey vehicle and has more comfortable seats, it precisely comes on time according to the ticket purchased in the ITX machine. Both trains use the same railroad so be attentive to where you hop into and make sure to check the platform if you are at the right car number, these details are found on the right side of the ticket, the digits there will show you the car and seat number.

Lovely Strangers

I wasn't really sure if I was at the right platform for the ITX train yet the signs pointed me in the same direction for the Korail trains. It turns out that I just needed to wait for my scheduled time and board the ITX train. I didn't know that the Korail and ITX trains share the same railway station. The good thing I came across about this lovely Korean couple was the guy was friendly enough and seemed to know a little bit of English, so he tried to explain to me to just wait for my train, he even went the extra mile to ask passersby if I was at the right platform. He asked me to wait and he went to the train officer's office to get some real information, when he came back he gave me an assurance that I was on the right track and I didn't need to transfer to any other platform.

Korean Roasted Eggs

When I boarded the train surprisingly the couple also took the same train but to a different train stop. We laughed and I said my deep gratitude with all flying colors. He even gave me my first-ever Korean roasted eggs, it was delicious and was even more fulfilling due to his kind gesture. Aside from that, there were two Ajhussi who tried to help me too, they pointed to the number on my ticket and the screen which was in Hangul to tell me that it was not my train and just wait. I'm really amazed by their friendly approach, they were open and kind enough to help a lost tourist. I'm starting to love Korea. Saying thank you in their language also made a big difference, keep in mind to say Hello for "Annyeong Haseyo" and Thank you for "Kamsahamnida."

Purchase Bus Tour Ticket

Once I arrived at Gapyeong Station, I went out and proceeded to the tourist information center located outside the station near the bus stop. It's advisable to purchase the bus tour ticket especially if you don't have your own vehicle besides the fare is already for the whole and you can hop in and out from the bus to go to other places on the island. I took the bus and alighted at the Namiseom Zip Wire which is also alongside the Namiseom Dock if you intend to take the ferry.

Bike Rental

Optional: Bike 5,000 won - 10,000 won (30 minutes-1 hour)

Namiseom Zip Wire to Nami Island

I wanted to experience a thrilling adventure going to the island so I chose the Namiseom Zip Wire that goes straight to Nami Island. It's a fast, safe, and exciting way to reach the island, my backpack was placed in front of me and I ziplined all the way down. I leisurely walked around when I got there, taking my time and taking it all in. The place was beautiful with towering trees lined perfectly parallel to each other. Some of the trees had started to embrace the winter season, leaves were falling and the ground was cushioned with crispy, brown leaves. I sat on a bench, took out my camera, and started goofing around with myself.

Bike Around Nami Island

In the afternoon I rented out a bike, and I cycle here and there, I even made it as my tripod for taking pictures of the beautiful scenery and with my jump shots. In other words, the bike became my partner. Nami Island is actually famous for lovers, couples flock here in numbers to have their pictures taken. The island was made more popular because of a Korean series with an Endless Love Season-themed entitled "Winter Sonata." Looking back I've never really thought about visiting the island thou it was a perfect place for couples to stroll around and have some relaxing days together. But I was already in Korea and Nami Island is one place that should be visited in this beautiful country.

Being alone wasn't that bad, I got to see the island at my own pace, find my own chill-out spot, and have some peace of mind with nature. I spent the whole day on Nami Island mesmerised by its beauty so I didn't manage to check out the other places besides The Garden of the Morning Calm was still not open until Dec 5 during my visit. Manage your time wisely, hop on the tourist shuttle bus and check out other attractions like Petite France and The Garden of the Morning Calm.

Korean Bibimbap Meal

I went back to Seoul to my guesthouse and had my first official Korean Bibimbap Meal at this small restaurant located just a few metres away from Boa Travel house. Nothing beats the authentic taste, where else would you find the best tasting Bibimbap in the whole world? well only in Korea. I tried the best bibimbap ever at Jeju Island, I'll tell you more about it in this post here: Jeju Island Trip

Day 8: Seoul City Tour Guide

The first five days of my trip to South Korea were just with me, but this is around for the following five days I'll be spending with my sister. We didn't really plan everything but things work out well with our city tour. The day we met in the city was also the day we went looking for our accommodation. It was freezing, with my luggage hanging along with me as we strolled around in Myeongdong station searching for a place to stay.

Where To Stay in Seoul: Two Travelers

I can't recall how much we paid for the room with our own toilet and with breakfast as well but I know for sure they gave us a further discount for our whole stay there. Our city tours start the next day.

There are two significant places we've visited there and each is just walking distance away from each other. It's in the same train line and a few stations away from Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station.

Samgyeopsal Lunch in Myeongdong

After seeing the palace we went back to Myeongdong Station and had our delicious Samgyeopsal mealA popular Korean dish that is a must-try when you're in Korea. The meal comprises of slices of pork belly meat and is cooked on a grill at the table. You can eat the meat alone or pair it up with your lettuce and wrap the meat along with your preference for sauce, kimchi, and even mushrooms.

Shopping at Myeongdong

I bought these cute socks as souvenirs for my family and friends. 11 pieces for 10,000 won. Practical choice as each sock will cost less than a dollar.

We were already in Myengdong and might as well visit the famous Seoul Tower. The queue for the cable car was ridiculous, we waited for almost an hour for our turn. It's better to avoid the weekend, this is one reason why I prefer the mountains or any nature adventure trips because not everyone wants to put the effort to go to these places.

Spicy Chicken and Beer Combo

I'm not really that interested in infrastructure but when it comes to food I'm all smiling. Koreans have this chicken and beer obsession. They said it was the perfect match made from heaven. After we made our way down from the cable car we passed by this store selling fried chicken, there were no more seats available so we decided to have it in our guesthouse and bought 2 cans of Korean Beer. Now I know what they mean. They really know how to cook their fried chickens. Truly and definitely a perfect match for a beer most especially with the sweater weather.

Day 9: Suwon Trip

Dec 7 (Monday) Meet a friend in Suwon

Korean Folk Village

We took the train early in the morning to Suwon Station to meet my sister's friend. Visited the Korean Folk Village and learned something about Korea's traditional life and culture. I was surprised to see the "Queen Seondeok" human-size poster inside the village, my family back in the Philippines got addicted to this Korean drama series. What a coincidence that I saw a familiar face in Korea which I truly admired. I snapped a picture of it and sent it to my mum which really got her jumping for joy.

Sunset at Hwaseong Fortress

After an enriching tour of Korea, we went to Hwaseong Fortress, the wall surrounding the centre of Suwon which is the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It's amazing to see this fortress as it encircles the city, with all the buildings and cars it seemed not to fit its long-time location.

Korean Steamboat Buffet

I ate a lot with this meal yet it didn't feel heavy in my stomach, I'm guessing it's because of the weather. My sister's friend was kind enough to feed our wanderlust tummy. She's a permanent resident in Korea, married, and has two kids. Life is simple in Suwon, away from the bustling noise of city life. I just met her but I've sensed a strong connection of friendship which made it hard to say goodbye at the end of the day. Some people were meant to pass by in our lives, take it as a cherished experience and that is why I love traveling. Meeting wonderful people along the way makes you want to travel more.

Day 10: Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Tour

Dec 8 (Tuesday) Crossing the Border at DMZ

The next day was our DMZ Tour which we booked with our guesthouse for 45,000 won. It's the line across the peninsula separating North Korea and South Korea. We went inside one of the tunnels, 3rd tunnel, which goes all the way to the boundary. The North Koreans dug this hole to infiltrate South Korea.

Try out the Country's Coffee Madness and the delicious Ice Shaving Dessert

Coffee shops are everywhere in South Korea. It's a perfect treat for the cold weather. I also heard about their ice shaving desserts, looking for it was a piece of cake as well. The fine ice melts in your mouth which is creamy and sweet. It's one of my favorite desserts now!

Day 11: Ahnyeonghi Gyeseyo Korea

Dec 9 Back to Singapore. Seoul Incheon International Terminal A to Changi Terminal 2

All Meat Samgyeopsal Buffet before going straight to the airport.

Goodbye Korea = Ahnyeonghi Gyeseyo Korea
Thank you = Kamsahamnida for the Wonderful Memories

Have fun and be safe ^__^

Do you want more adventure?
If you still have one more day to spare why not go to Nami Island and check out the most romantic island in South Korea.

Where am I going next?
